His time in NJ, especially in 2012 when injured, really changed my perception of him as a selfish player. But now he's dead to me.

Trades don't work that way, buddy. You can't just say "I want two prospects" and call it a day. You can't even do that with draft picks. Players and picks have different values so, yes, you do have to negotiate and "work out deals."

I think the real problem was that when you combined the number of teams interested with the number of places he was willing to play, there just weren't a lot of options.

When you think about it, considering the sequence of events, the amount of power Kovalchuk had was insane. He walked away from a 15 year deal and bailed on the league. He got his money (tax free) in Russia playing for the "rival" KHL, comes back to the NHL and now basically gets free reign to choose where he wants to play. As an outsider that's unreal to even think about, but as a Devils fan it's a real swift kick in the jollies.

Except the GM said he didn't turn down an offer because there wasn't an offer to turn down. No one wanted him because they new they could just wait a year and get him without giving up anything.

He "hopes" to play in the NHL next season. If there is any justice in this world, he will blow out a knee in the Olympics and not be on the podium to get his stinking Bronze Medal.....and no one will take a chance on a 36 year old, gimpy POS next year!!!!

There had to be a sign and trade deal and NJ gave him permission to talk to other teams.

The issue was and is he didn't work out a contract with anyone so there was no trade proposal for NJ to turn down.

He will be UFA next year and get a 2 year deal,

What kind of horsesh!t is this? His contract should have been suspended when he "retired". Now he plays in the Olympics and gets to hit UFA next offseason, NJ get royally screwed again. This guy is a joke should not be allowed to come back unless he plays for NJ.
